Guar Seed Trading Guide: Price Drivers & NCDEX Basics
Contract size, delivery points, and the monsoon, feed and shale-drilling data that move India's most volatile agri contract.
NCDEX runs India's guar seed futures contract (ticker GUARSEED10). One lot is 5 tonnes. Price is quoted per quintal, with a tick of ₹1. The contract expires on the 20th of the month. Delivery happens at Jodhpur, or at Bikaner, Nokha, Deesa and Sriganganagar. Guar seed prices swing with Rajasthan's monsoon, sowing and harvest data, and global demand for guar gum used in oil and gas drilling. That mix makes it one of the most volatile contracts on NCDEX.
What Is Guar Seed Trading on NCDEX?
NCDEX is India's top farm-commodity exchange. SEBI regulates it. Its guar seed futures let farmers, processors and traders fix a price today for guar seed they will buy or sell later. India grows most of the world's guar. Rajasthan alone grows most of India's crop. A futures contract turns the crop's price risk into one clear, tradeable number.
The contract ticker is GUARSEED10, though the actual lot size is 5 tonnes, not 10. The name is a legacy label from an older contract size. It is based on whitish guar seed with set limits on damage, moisture and foreign matter, delivered ex-warehouse from Jodhpur.

What Moves Guar Seed Prices
Guar is a rain-fed crop grown mostly in the dry parts of Rajasthan, with some output from Haryana and Gujarat. Farmers sow it from July to September, right through the monsoon. Harvest runs from October to December. A weak monsoon over Rajasthan can cut the crop hard, since guar needs little water but still depends on timely rain to germinate and fill pods.
Four other forces move the price:
- Guar gum demand from oil and gas drilling: processed guar seed yields guar gum, a thickener used in hydraulic fracturing fluid worldwide. A pickup in US shale drilling can pull international guar gum orders up fast, and that flows back into NCDEX guar seed prices.
- Cattle feed demand: guar churi and guar korma, the by-products left after gum extraction, are common cattle and poultry feed in India. Feed demand sets a steady floor under guar prices.
- Carry-forward stock: guar seed stores well, so old stock often overlaps with the new crop. Farmers and stockists holding back supply in a rising market can add fuel to a price run.
- Speculation and margin action: guar seed and guar gum have a history of sharp, news-driven rallies. During the 2011-12 guar boom, the regulator imposed extra special margins to cool the market. NCCL can still add special margins fast when volatility spikes.

How to Trade Guar Seed Futures
Five steps get you started:
- Open a commodity trading account. Link it to your trading and demat account. Complete your KYC.
- Fund your account with margin money. Guar seed can need more margin than calmer contracts like turmeric, since the exchange's SPAN model reacts fast to its price swings.
- Search the GUARSEED10 contract. Pick the expiry month you want.
- Set your lot count. Place the order inside the day's price band.
- Track the position daily. One lot is 50 quintals, so even a small price move changes your margin needs.
Here is a quick example. Say guar seed trades at ₹5,000 per quintal. One lot (50 quintals) is then worth ₹2,50,000. Unlike turmeric's flat 12% minimum margin, guar seed margin is set by NCCL's risk-based SPAN model. It moves with recent volatility, so always check the live margin figure on your trading terminal before you place an order.
Traders who don't want real delivery must close their position before the tender period starts, in the last few trading days before expiry. Anyone still holding a position in that window can be assigned delivery at a real warehouse.
Guar Seed vs Other NCDEX Agri Contracts
Guar seed stands apart from most farm contracts on NCDEX. Turmeric and jeera move mainly with Indian rain and Indian mandi supply. Guar seed does too, but it also answers to a second, unrelated force: global oil and gas drilling. That second driver is what gave guar its wild 2011-12 rally and why it still carries a reputation as one of the more volatile agri contracts on the exchange.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Sizing positions for a calm contract: guar seed can move harder and faster than staple grain contracts. Size lots for their history of sharp swings, not for an average agri-commodity day.
- Ignoring margin changes: NCCL can raise SPAN and special margins quickly in a fast market. Keep spare funds in the account, not just the bare minimum.
- Sliding into the tender period by mistake: a long position held into expiry can mean real delivery at a real warehouse. Close or roll the position well before that window opens.
- Trading crude oil headlines without checking guar-specific data: shale drilling news moves guar gum demand, but Rajasthan rainfall and mandi arrivals still set the near-term price. Check both before you trade.
- No stop-loss plan: guar can gap hard on weekend rain or drilling news. A trailing stop-loss protects gains better than a plan kept only in your head.
Guar seed futures suit two kinds of traders. First, processors, exporters and farmers who want to hedge a genuinely volatile crop. Second, traders who can handle sharp swings with a firm risk plan and enough margin buffer. Before your first trade, read up on the basics of commodity trading in India, learn how futures differ from options, and review sound risk management habits built for leveraged trades. Commodity futures profits are taxed differently from equity trades too, so check the tax rules for active traders before you file returns.
