TRAI's June 2026 telecom report showed India's subscriber base rising to 1.348 billion. Bharti Airtel led monthly mobile subscriber additions, while Reliance Jio remained the largest telecom operator with the highest active wireless subscribers and broadband market share.

Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel continued to dominate India's telecom market in June, as both operators led different aspects of subscriber growth.

Driven by high-speed wireless expansion and rapid adoption of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services, India’s total telephone subscriber base expanded to 1,348.08 million (1.348 billion) at the end of June 2026, marking a net monthly addition of 4.98 million connections.

The latest monthly performance report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reveals a competitive dynamic among the country's top telecom operators.

Bharti Airtel outpaced its private rivals Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) to capture the highest volume of net overall mobile subscriber additions during the month. However, Reliance Jio maintained its status as India's largest telecom provider and led the industry in active (VLR) wireless subscriber growth.

Reliance Jio followed in total mobile additions, gaining 2,146,980 users. Vodafone Idea added 163,757 users, while BSNL added 94,006 users. Overall, private sector operators held a combined 92.73% market share in the mobile segment, while public sector operators (BSNL/MTNL) accounted for 7.27%.

2. Reliance Jio Leads Active Wireless Subscribers; Airtel Tops VLR Ratio

Out of India's 1,282.38 million wireless mobile subscribers, 1,201.06 million (93.66%) were active on the peak Visitor Location Register (VLR) operational dates.

  • Reliance Jio remained the industry's largest active wireless operator with 498.89 million VLR subscribers, accounting for nearly 41.5% of India's total active wireless subscriber base.

  • Bharti Airtel reported the highest VLR ratio at 99.27%, indicating that nearly all of its wireless subscribers were active on the peak VLR date.

  • Vodafone Idea and BSNL trailed behind, reporting active user ratios of 83.98% and 55.58%, respectively.

3. Wireline Subscriber Base Declines Despite Airtel and Jio Growth

India’s wireline subscriber base declined by 1.67% month-on-month to 47.82 million. This contraction was primarily driven by state-run BSNL, which lost 796,408 fixed-line connections in June. Conversely, private operators continued to expand their fixed-line footprint, led by Bharti Airtel (+173,667) and Reliance Jio (+144,057).

4. Broadband and 5G FWA Subscriber Growth Remains Strong

Total broadband connections reached 1,087.50 million. Reliance Jio remained the largest broadband service provider with a 48.94% market share (532.21 million subscribers), followed by Bharti Airtel with a 34.94% share (379.97 million subscribers).

High-speed Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) continues its growth trajectory:

  • 5G FWA Subscribers: Increased to 12,935,392 connections in June 2026 from 12,732,829 in May. Reliance Jio led the segment with 9,114,357 connections, followed by Bharti Airtel with 3,821,035 connections.

  • UBR FWA Subscribers: Unlicensed Band Radio (UBR) FWA reached 4.93 million connections, with Reliance Jio remaining the sole reporting operator in this category.

5. Machine-to-Machine (M2M) & Mobile Number Portability (MNP)

Cellular M2M connections grew to 134.73 million in June 2026. Bharti Airtel dominates the M2M domain with 82.77 million connections (61.44% market share), followed by Reliance Jio with 25.76 million (19.12% share).

Consumer churn remained active as 14.78 million MNP requests were submitted in June (up from 14.46 million in May).

Zone-I (Northern & Western India) recorded 8.07 million requests, led by UP East (2.10 million), while Zone-II (Southern & Eastern India) recorded 6.71 million requests, led by Madhya Pradesh (1.40 million).

Conclusion

The latest TRAI subscription data for June 2026 underscores a dynamic shift in India’s telecom landscape. While traditional wireline connections continue to contract, rapid adoption of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and high-speed mobile connectivity propelled total telecom subscriptions to a record 1,348.08 million. Bharti Airtel captured the quarter’s strongest overall mobile growth, but Reliance Jio’s dominant subscriber count and market-leading active user base ensure it remains the heavyweight of the Indian telecom sector as operators race to monetize next-generation digital services.
