Quick Summary

NSE Indices will implement its September 2026 index rebalancing after market hours on September 29. BSE will replace Wipro in the Nifty 50, while Nifty 100, Nifty Next 50 and Nifty 500 will also see several additions and exits.

NSE Index Rebalancing: NSE Indices is set to carry out a reshuffle across its key benchmark indices in September 2026. The changes will affect Nifty 50, Nifty 100, Nifty Next 50 and Nifty 500, with the revised constituents becoming effective from September 30, 2026, after the close of trading on September 29.

The biggest change will come in Nifty 50, where BSE is set to replace Wipro. The move will bring the stock exchange operator into India’s benchmark 50-stock index, while Wipro will move to Nifty Next 50.

Nifty 50 is designed to represent major companies across important sectors of the Indian economy. It is calculated using the free-float market capitalisation method. As of March 30, 2026, its constituents represented about 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of companies listed on NSE.

What is NSE Index Rebalancing?

NSE index rebalancing is the periodic review of stocks included in an index. NSE Indices assess companies based on the methodology and eligibility criteria of each index and may add or remove stocks or change their weights.

Major indices such as Nifty 50 are rebalanced semi-annually, with changes taking effect on the last working day of March and September.

Nifty 100 to See Five Additions and Five Exits

Nifty 100 will also undergo a reshuffle. Indian Hotels, Lodha Developers, REC, Shree Cement and United Spirits will exit the index.

They will be replaced by BSE, Hitachi Energy India, Polycab India, Vedanta Aluminium Metal and Vodafone Idea. The same changes will also be reflected in the Nifty 100 Equal Weight Index.

Nifty Next 50 will see five replacements as well. Hitachi Energy India, Polycab India, Vedanta Aluminium Metal, Vodafone Idea and Wipro will enter the index, while Indian Hotels, Lodha Developers, REC, Shree Cement and United Spirits will exit.

Wipro’s move into Nifty Next 50 follows its removal from Nifty 50. Under NSE Indices’ framework, Nifty Next 50 consists of companies from Nifty 100 that are not part of the Nifty 50.

Nifty 500 Faces Wider Reshuffle

Nifty 500 will see an even larger change, with 27 companies leaving and 27 new companies joining.

Among the new entrants are Aether Industries, Avanti Feeds, Azad Engineering, Bharat Coking Coal, Black Box, Brookfield India Real Estate Trust, Fractal Analytics, INOX India, Rubicon Research, Sterlite Technologies and TD Power Systems, among others.

Conclusion: Why Index Rebalancing Matters?

Index changes can have a direct impact on stocks because passive funds, exchange-traded funds and other investment products that track these indices need to adjust their portfolios.

Stocks entering major indices can see additional buying demand, while companies leaving them may face selling pressure. It can increase trading volumes and liquidity around the effective date.

NSE’s official rebalancing calendar states that major broad-based indices, including Nifty 50, Nifty 100, Nifty Next 50 and Nifty 500, are generally reviewed twice a year, with changes implemented on the last working day of March and September.

For investors, September 30 rebalancing is important not only because BSE enters into Nifty 50, but also because of the broader changes across large, mid and small-cap stocks. The resulting passive fund flows could influence trading activity and short-term price movements in several affected companies.
