Voltas is taking a bigger step towards localising its air conditioner supply chain by partnering with Atomberg Innovation Private Limited to manufacture energy-efficient room AC compressors in India.
The two companies have signed a binding term sheet to establish a 50:50 joint venture, which will set up a manufacturing facility in Chennai. The plant is planned with an initial production capacity of around 2.8 million compressors a year.
Voltas will act as the anchor customer for the venture. However, the joint venture will also be able to supply compressors to other room air conditioner manufacturers in India.
Voltas Looks to Reduce Import Dependence
Compressors are among the most important and expensive components in an air conditioner. India's AC industry has traditionally depended heavily on imported compressors, making manufacturers vulnerable to supply disruptions, shipping costs and global price movements.
The proposed Chennai facility will allow Voltas to bring a critical part of its supply chain closer to home.
The partnership also combines two different strengths. Voltas brings its established presence in the room AC market, manufacturing scale and distribution network, while Atomberg contributes expertise in energy-efficient BLDC motors and electronic control systems.
The arrangement could therefore help Voltas develop a more integrated domestic supply chain while supporting the industry's broader shift towards energy-efficient cooling products.

JV Will Not Be Limited to Voltas
The proposed venture will operate on an equal 50:50 ownership structure.
Its board will have five members, with Voltas nominating three directors and Atomberg nominating two.
Importantly, the facility will not be restricted to supplying Voltas. The joint venture can sell compressors to other room air conditioner brands in the domestic market.
This allows the business to build volumes beyond its anchor customer and potentially benefit from the wider growth of India's AC market.
Conclusion: Local Manufacturing Could Reshape AC Supply Chains
For the Indian air conditioner industry, the proposed venture could have implications beyond Voltas.
