Settlement Holiday on 26 August 2026: What Changes for You

A settlement holiday trips up more traders than a full market holiday. The screen looks normal. Your money moves later. Here is what changes on 26 August.

It is not a trading holiday

On a trading holiday, the exchanges shut. You cannot place an order at all.

A settlement holiday is different. The session runs as normal. But banks are shut, so clearing stops. Money and shares then move one working day later. India settles trades in one day. So a single paused day pushes it all forward by a day.

What changes for you

• Profits and sale proceeds from trades on Tuesday, 25 August, will be available on Thursday, 27 August.
• Withdrawal requests placed after 4:00 PM on Tuesday, 25 August, will be processed on Thursday, 27 August by 10 PM. Instant withdrawals will work on Wednesday, 26 August, as usual.
• Stocks bought on Tuesday, 25 August, can be sold only from Thursday, 27 August, once they settle.

Intraday trades are not hit. You open and close them in the same session. Nothing waits. Only the cash credit waits.

How to plan for it

Two steps help. Need cash by Wednesday? Place the withdrawal before 4:00 PM on Tuesday. Plan to sell a stock fast? Note that shares bought on Tuesday cannot be sold till Thursday.

Traders who like same-day exits can stick to intraday rather than delivery that week. 

One more point. Your holdings and open positions are safe. Nothing is frozen. Only the cash and share transfer is queued for a day.
