Why are Indian banks actively tapping overseas dollar bond markets now?

Indian lenders are raising foreign-currency funds to diversify their balance sheet liabilities and access lower funding costs:

  • RBI Concessional Swap Window: The Reserve Bank of India provides an external commercial borrowing (ECB) swap facility at a fixed annual rate of 1.5% through December 31, significantly lowering foreign exchange hedging costs.

  • Sector Trend: Other major lenders have recently executed similar bond sales, including Kotak Mahindra Bank ($650 million), IDFC First Bank ($500 million), and ICICI Bank.

Conclusion: What does this mean for you as an investor?
