Tata Communications announced its Q1 FY27 results today. Revenue grew at a healthy pace. Profit did not keep up.
For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, income from operations rose 10.5% year-on-year. It touched ₹6,582.82 crore, up from ₹5,959.85 crore a year earlier. But profit attributable to equity holders of the parent fell 29.3%. It dropped to ₹134.23 crore from ₹189.98 crore.
The market reaction was swift. Tata Communications shares fell more than 7% after the results were announced on July 22, 2026 (as of 2:00 PM).
So what pulled profit down while revenue held up? The answer sits in the expense line as a one-off charge.
Tata Communications Q1 FY27 Results at a Glance
| Metric | Q1 FY27 | Q1 FY26 |
|---|---|---|
| Income from operations | ₹6,582.82 cr | ₹5,959.85 cr |
| Total income | ₹6,595.76 cr | ₹5,976.95 cr |
| Profit before exceptional items, tax & share in associates | ₹317.74 cr | ₹311.69 cr |
| Profit attributable to equity holders | ₹134.23 cr | ₹189.98 cr |
Why Profit Fell Despite Higher Revenue
The gap between revenue growth and profit growth stands out first. Operating revenue grew more than 10%. But profit before exceptional items, tax and share in associates grew less than 2%. It moved from ₹311.69 crore to just ₹317.74 crore.
The expense side explains why. Total expenses rose 10.8%, from ₹5,665.26 crore to ₹6,278.02 crore. Network and transmission costs, the largest expense item, jumped from ₹2,729.07 crore to ₹3,144.09 crore. Higher revenue came with a matching rise in costs.
A ₹106 Crore Exceptional Loss Added to the Pain
Profit weakened further. The reason: a ₹106.36 crore exceptional loss this quarter. That is much bigger than the ₹20.44 crore exceptional loss a year ago.
As a result, profit before tax and share in profit of associates fell 27.4%. It dropped from ₹291.25 crore to ₹211.38 crore.
There is one more wrinkle. Profit after tax from ongoing operations stood at ₹129.72 crore, down from ₹232.33 crore last year. But last year's quarter also carried a ₹42.19 crore loss from a discontinued unit. That pulled total profit for that period down to ₹190.14 crore. This is why different profit lines show different drops. For profit attributable to equity holders, the fall was 29.3% year-on-year.
Data Services Stayed the Biggest Growth Driver
Segment numbers show growth was not spread evenly across the business.
| Segment | Q1 FY27 Revenue | Q1 FY26 Revenue |
|---|---|---|
| Voice Solutions | ₹381.95 cr | ₹394.54 cr |
| Data Services | ₹5,703.58 cr | ₹5,151.72 cr |
| Transformation Services | ₹194.59 cr | ₹224.01 cr |
| Real Estate | ₹51.99 cr | ₹52.04 cr |
| Campaign Registry | ₹258.70 cr | ₹189.38 cr |
Data Services added close to ₹552 crore in fresh revenue. It remains the single biggest growth engine. Campaign Registry grew even faster in percentage terms, up 36.6% to ₹258.70 crore. Its segment result rose too, from ₹122.93 crore to ₹147.14 crore.
Not every segment kept pace. Voice Solutions revenue slipped. Transformation Services fell around 13%. And overall, total segment result rose just 4.2%, from ₹471.12 crore to ₹490.70 crore. That is far slower than the 10.5% jump in operating revenue.
What was the single biggest reason Tata Communications' profit fell 29.3% even as revenue rose 10.5% in Q1 FY27?
Sequential Numbers Tell a Weaker Story
The quarter-on-quarter view adds another angle to the Tata Communications Q1 FY27 results.
| Metric | Q1 FY27 | Q4 FY26 |
|---|---|---|
| Income from operations | ₹6,582.82 cr | ₹6,554.15 cr |
| Total segment result | ₹490.70 cr | ₹552.94 cr |
| Profit before tax & share in associates | ₹211.38 cr | ₹434.09 cr |
| Profit for the period | ₹129.72 cr | ₹259.27 cr |
Operating revenue was almost flat sequentially, up just 0.4%. Total segment result fell more than 11%. Profit for the period came in at roughly half of the previous quarter's ₹259.27 crore.
The Bigger Picture
The key takeaway from the Tata Communications Q1 results is simple. Topline growth and bottom-line performance are moving further apart.
Operating revenue grew 10.5%, led mainly by Data Services and Campaign Registry. But total expenses also grew nearly 11%. Segment results grew much slower than revenue. And a ₹106.36 crore exceptional loss added further pressure. Put together, this is why revenue grew in double digits. Yet profit for equity holders still fell 29.3%.
For the coming quarters, two things are worth tracking. First, whether revenue growth starts converting into segment profit more efficiently. Second, whether the gap between topline and bottom-line growth begins to narrow.
